Jack & Noah hit the classrooms

Jack and Noah's Big Day is making the rounds of Omaha schools as part of 'read-to-the-class' activities or as part of a literature curriculum.  This spring the following teachers and schools have included Jack and Noah's Big Day as part of their lesson plans:

Beveridge Middle School Language Arts - Mrs. Grefe
Fontenelle Elementary Third Grade - Ms. Seymour and Mrs. Bachmann
Benson West Elementary Fourth Grade - Mrs. Gorczyca
Miller Park Elementary Sixth Grade - Mrs. Griger

Good luck to all of these classes!

Back in school

Do you remember being in school when a teacher handed out an assignment - a writing assignment - that sounded so daunting that you were fairly certain you would never finish it?  Seriously, how can you fit in writing a 3-page report about weasels when you have baseball practice, a game of kick-the-bucket with the neighbors, your parents' stupid requirement that you have to eat dinner while sitting down, and, well, the normal twenty-three trips to the bathroom each day?  That's where I am right now.  I'm just starting to work on an outline for a sequel to Jack and Noah's Big Day, and the mountain is looking pretty steep.  I think I'll start by going to the bathroom.  Only twenty-two trips to go today.

Snowden leaks Obama's notes on Ukraine crisis

That Eddie Snowden keeps getting into trouble.  Somehow he managed to get a photo of President Obama's handwritten notes from today's White House meeting on the Ukraine crisis.  Frankly, the notes tell us quite a bit about how boring the meeting was, but very little about the US response to it.   However, I like the President's thinking.  Jason Bourne would be perfect for this job, although I'm a little disappointed that the Red Dawn crew from 1984 didn't cross his mind.  Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen could resolve this Ukraine with a dozen portable grenade launchers.

Beveridge Magnet Midde School

The 100,000 employees of Jack and Noah's Big Corporation from all over the world (but mostly just in my house) would like to recognize the 7th Grade Language Arts class at Beveridge Magnet Middle School, which is beginning to read Jack and Noah's Big Day today.  Mrs. Grefe is obviously a wonderful teacher and will be leading the class through the book.  If they're not sufficiently warped by the time they finish the book, then I'll visit the class to finish the job.  So... a big shout out to my readers at Beveridge Magnet Middle School!

Another magazine cover...

I suppose I'll eventually get tired of being a media darling, but I'm pleased to announce that I'm being featured as the cover story in the new magazine, 'Keep Your Day Job.'  To be honest, I haven't done a lot of research on the magazine, but I figure that any publicity is good publicity.  Right?

Crazy Luke, the short story

It's not like I've been lazy for the past month, but it's hard to get a lot of work done with the eight appearances on national TV, a meeting with President Obama, and a quick trip to Sochi to light the Olympic torch.  Well... maybe I'm exaggerating.  I spent most of the last month being an accountant, which is slightly less glamorous than all of those things.  However, I did create a short story about Crazy Luke, who is the favorite character for many of the kids who have read Jack and Noah's Big Day.  Just to be clear, when I call it a short story, I'm not making fun of Crazy Luke because he's short. But he is really, really short, mostly because he's only four years old.

For those of you who are interested, I have not sold 1,000 copies of Jack and Noah's Big Day, but I am working on ideas for a second book.  So... while you're waiting four years for me to finish Jack and Noah's Big Election, you can enjoy the Crazy Luke short story by clicking here

I love the Omaha World Herald

I was lucky enough to be featured in the Living Section of the Omaha World Herald this morning - Saturday, January 4 - in a story written by Carol Bicak, the OWH book reviewer and Community Connections writer.  I'm not sure you'll find a more influential person in the Omaha book community, and yet Carol is one of the most warm and humble people I've met in years.  We talked for over an hour on the day after Christmas, and it seemed like it was only five minutes.

If you've stumbled onto this website because of the OWH article, thanks for joining the four members of the Jack and Noah Fan Club who have visited www.jayslagle.com over 3,000 times in the past two months.  If you'd like to join the Fan Club, please send a cashier's check for $99.99 to... oh, wait, there is no Jack and Noah Fan Club.

In lieu of joining a fan club, you can do a few other things:

(a) Buy the book.  See the 'Buy Book' tab on this website for more information.

(b) Rate the book on www.Amazon.com and www.Goodreads.com.

(c) Tell your friends about the book via FaceBook, Twitter, e-mail and in person.

(d) Buy an extra book for a local school library or for your child's classroom.

(e) Help get me spots on national TV shows.  That would be cool.

Have a BIG day!

Slagle to face charges for 20 Days of Stupid

Omaha, NE (CBS)  Police Chief John Schrunchy announced at a press conference this morning that charges will be filed against Jay Slagle, the local author who subjected people around the world to the horrific ’20 Days of Stupid,’ a social medial and abstract art project.  The ‘20 Days’ project was scheduled to end today, but some observers have suggested that Slagle’s actions the last 20 days are no different than anything he did before the project started on November 23.

“I’ve known him for ten years,” said neighbor Tim Gunn, “and the only time the guy is serious is when he’s constipated.  Oh, and the time all of his kids ran away because they were sick of him.  I don’t think he said anything stupid that entire day.”

Chief Schrunchy gave vague responses to what charges might be filed, but possibilities appear to include the following:

  • Indecent use of the English language;
  • Unauthorized use of the Internet for nefarious deeds;
  • Illegal use of the Dodge Street pedestrian bridge for commercial purposes;
  • Picketing without a permit;
  • Cruel and unusual embarrassment of his children;
  • Theft by deception (he’s really saying this book is worth $10?);
  • Indecent exposure for distributing a photograph of his bald head via the Internet.

Slagle will be arrested as soon as he can be found.  He may be fleeing the state.  If so, the State Patrol has been directed to not let him return to Nebraska.  His wife issued a statement, giving her blessing for the State Patrol to do “whatever it needs to do” to keep Slagle from returning home.

Jack and Noah’s Big Day by Jay Slagle is available for $9.99 at the Bookworm bookstore at 8702 Pacific in Omaha or on-line at Amazon.  Learn more about the book at www.jayslagle.com.  This is the final day of his ‘20 Days of Stupid’ project, which ran from November 23rd thru December 12th on Twitter (JaySlagleWrites), Instagram (JaySlagleWrites), Facebook (JackAndNoahsBigDay) and his website (www.jayslagle.com).  The book is available for reservations at the Omaha Public Library.

Supreme Court sanctions 7-year-old girl; she doesn't care

Lincoln, NE  (CNN)  In an unprecedented action, the Nebraska Supreme Court announced on Saturday that it has sanctioned a seven-year-old Omaha girl for the unlicensed practice of law.  The Supreme Court concluded that this past summer Greta Taylor, a third-grade student at St. Margaret Mary, had repeatedly represented herself as an attorney to her client (eight-year-old Jack Taylor), to representatives of the Omaha Police Department and the Douglas County Health Department, and to the media.

Greta’s legal work was on full display in Jack and Noah’s Big Day, when her brother Jack and his best friend Noah Patton repeatedly were in need of legal advice.  Omaha attorney John Dooley, a friend of the Taylor family, had told media outlets that he was representing Jack Taylor, but insiders have said Greta was far more effective than Mr. Dooley.

“While no harm resulted from Ms. Taylor’s actions – indeed, her legal skills appear to be among the best in Nebraska –the fact remains that Nebraska law requires individuals to be licensed by the State in order to hold themselves out as attorneys,” the court’s statement read.  “Consequently, we have no leeway in this ruling.  If we did have leeway, we would give an award to Ms. Taylor for her brilliant legal work, and we would sanction John Dooley, a licensed attorney who is half as bright as Greta.”

The Supreme Court has never sanctioned a child for the unlicensed practice of law, so it was clear that the justices struggled with how to discipline her.  Ultimately they decided to take away her iPod for one week and ban her from sleepovers for one month.  They stopped short of confiscating her American Girl dolls.

When reached for comment, Greta indicated that she didn’t care “what a bunch of old fuddy-duds think about me.  I’m busy running an Internet company and a clothing line that I started with my best friends Delaney and Mary Kate – I really don’t have time to be a lawyer this month anyway.”

Health department closes Bookworm due to itsy-bitsy spiders

Omaha, NE (AP)  A local bookstore, The Bookworm, was besieged by over a dozen members of the Douglas County Health Department late last night.  Chief Inspector Frank Kraznick led the unannounced raid at 10:14 p.m.  Sources indicate that an anonymous phone call was received several hours earlier, and the caller reported that The Bookworm was infested with thousands of itsy bitsy spiders and hungry little caterpillars.

After twelve hours of searching, the Health Department reported that the report was false.  The County Crime Lab was asked to review the phone recording, and determined that the call originated at the home of a 12-year-old girl hosting a sleepover.  That house is also suspected to be the origin of an order for 10,000 pizzas, calls to multiple bars asking to speak with Amanda Hugginkiss, and a very poor impersonation of Harry Potter.

The Bookworm re-opened at noon Wednesday.  The delayed opening was a significant challenge for the Bookworm, since it has been continuously busy since it began selling Jack and Noah’s Big Day, the first book written by Jay Slagle.  Slagle is a comedic genius, but this should not come as a surprise.  Jay Slagle is half-German and an accountant.

The Bookworm will be the site of a book signing by Slagle on Saturday, December 7 from 12:00-2:00 p.m.  If no one shows up, he’s calling his mommy.

Humane Society objects to Slagle's portrayal of basset hound

Omaha, NE  (MSNBC)  The Nebraska Humane Society’s primary role is to protect animals from physical harm, but yesterday they made it clear they’ll also defend animals from literary harm.  The Humane Society (NHS) took the unusual step of issuing a press release today decrying the characterization of basset hounds in Jack and Noah’s Big Day, a children’s book written by Jay Slagle that was published on October 31.

“We believe all animals are special and need to be protected by us,” read the press release from Pam Wiese, NHS spokeswoman, “and we are compelled to speak out against Jay Slagle’s irresponsible portrayal of Stella the basset hound in his recent book.  Basset hounds are perfect dogs; they are not lazy, annoying, or continuously eating.  They cannot pick a lock.  Their ears cannot be used as weapons.”

“While this very entertaining book, available now at The Bookworm and online at Amazon,” continued the press release, “is certain to be the world’s best-selling book in 2014, we do have to object to Slagle’s description of basset hounds.  However, if he gives us an autographed copy of the book, we’ll act like this whole  press release thing-a-ma-jig didn’t happen.”

When reached for comment, Stella the basset hound stuck to her standard response.  “Woof,” she said, “woof, woof.”  Jay Slagle was more long-winded when he staunchly defended the accuracy of the book, saying, “Woof, woof, woof woof woof!”

When Slagle was initially defiant (see exclamation point at end of previous sentence), the Humane Society stepped up the pressure and took the unusual step of announcing at noon on Monday that Stella would be removed from the author's home.  However, after several hours of tense negotiations between Slagle's attorney (7-year-old Greta) and Humane Society officials, Slagle was allowed to keep the dog as long as he walked her every day.  In addition, he signed an agreement that if he writes a follow-up book to Jack and Noah's Big Day, he will describe Stella as "svelte, fast and obedient."  Of course, Slagle's fingers were crossed when he signed the agreement, so don't expect him to comply with it.

In Jack and Noah’s Big Day, The Nebraska Humane Society was of one four charities supported by the ‘coolest birthday party ever.’  That whole book is fiction, unfortunately, so the Nebraska Humane Society stills needs donations to support its programs.  Go to www.nebraskahumanesociety.org for more information.

P.S.  Pam Wiese from the Nebraska Humane Society may be the coolest spokesperson in the United States.

Mayor awards - then revokes - bravery award to 4 year old

Omaha, NE (UPS)  Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert became the first Omaha mayor to give a citizen an award for bravery and then demand the award be returned a few hours later.

Four-year-old Luke Douglas, a Dundee resident, was recognized in a mayoral office ceremony for saving the lives of Jim and June Logan.  While the Logans were at work on July 15, a natural gas leak developed in their house on 52nd Street.  In her proclamation naming Saturday “Luke Douglas Day,” Mayor Stothert noted that Luke Douglas alerted the fire department to the gas leak at mid-morning, and the fire department was able to minimize property damage and prevent any injuries from occurring.

At 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, an anonymous tipster told Mayor Stothert that Luke Douglas, known as 'Crazy Luke' in his neighborhood, had actually caused the Logan house to explode by lighting fireworks near the house.  Mayor Stothert quickly called a press conference.

“This morning I awarded a medal of bravery to four-year-old  Luke Douglas.  I have since learned that Luke is a constant threat to the safety of Dundee residents.  He may be the most dangerous person on the streets of Omaha.  I have requested that he return his medal and immediately report to the city jail.  I have directed the city attorney to make up whatever charges are needed to keep him in jail for several months.”

A few hours later, police reported engaging in a low-speed chase of a Honda minivan allegedly driven by Crazy Luke.    At press time, he still had not been arrested.  However, his fireworks-supplying father released a video on Crazy Luke's blogsite, www.CrazyLukeSpeaks.com.  Sporting a grumpy face and speaking like most four-year-old boys do, Crazy Luke responded to Stothert's accusations by saying, "She wrong.  Me not bad.  My daddy say polipootions lie all time."

Bookworm expects onslaught of Jack and Noah’s fans due to door buster sale

Omaha, NE (AP)  Black Friday is always a little crazy at Countryside Village, but the 2013 version promises to be a doozy.  In addition to the normal Black Friday calamity, the retailers and shoppers there will also have to deal with the thousands of Jack and Noah’s Big Day fans who are expected to converge on The Bookworm.

The previously announced ‘door buster’ sale at The Bookworm has been upgraded to include a special price for Jack and Noah’s Big Day.  Even though crazed fans are paying up to $40 on-line for an autographed copy of Jay Slagle’s book, The Bookworm is offering it for just $9.99.  This is truly a great value, since a columnist at the Omaha World Herald could eventually write that Jack and Noah’s Big Day the “most influential children’s book of this generation.”  The World Herald could also write that “Slagle needs to go back on his meds,” but the World Herald will write just about anything to sell newspapers.  (Fortunately, fiction authors are generally not this desperate.)

“We’re worried,” admitted a college-aged Bookworm employee as she jogged across the parking lot for the start of her shift.  “These child-lit fans are absolutely bonkers.  The pent-up energy among child-lit fans has been increasing since the last Harry Potter book was released in July 2007, and it’s going to blow with this amazing deal.  Jay Slagle’s already a legend on his block, and I’ve been told that he’s almost famous in Dundee."

Slagle is also scheduled for a book signing at The Bookworm on Saturday, December 7 from 12:00-2:00.  The Bookworm is ordering sandbags and ten bodyguards for Slagle’s appearance.  Slagle rarely is seen in public, preferring to spend his days writing stupid Twitter and Facebook postings.

Slagle couldn’t be reached for comment.  He had a mani-pedi and a hot-stone massage scheduled for all day today, and his publicist wife refused to bother him.  “He gets very cranky if you interrupt him before his cleansing process is complete,” she explained.

Omaha IT guru dies from excessive tweeting - first to die this way

Omaha, NE (UPS)  Social media expert Joe Craig, an IT expert to dozens of local, regional and national businesses and non-profits, died early Wednesday night.  At the insistence of President Obama, an autopsy was immediately performed.  The Omaha coroner announced at 3:02 on Thanksgiving morning that Craig died from ‘excessive tweeting.’  An extensive search of the Internet reveals that Twitter use has never been listed before as a cause of death, but it didn’t come as a surprise to many of his friends.

“Some guys want to die while running, or watching the Cornhuskers at Memorial Stadium, or in their sleep,” remarked his good friend Brian Kilroy, “but the way that Joe liked to tweet, you just knew that would be the way he’d want to go.”

Joe Craig’s death has left the Dundee neighborhood reeling from grief.  “It’s one thing to realize that I won’t see him at PTO meetings anymore,”  lamented Amy Nodes, “but I only saw him a few times a week.  It really hits me when I don’t know what time he wakes up, where he’s having coffee, what he’s having for dinner, and which kid he’s watching at a sporting event.  I know more about him than my husband.”

Joe leaves behind loving wife Kim and three children.  He also leaves a gaping hole in the social media universe, with dozens of nerds expected to vie for Dundee’s now-open mayor spot on FourSquare.  Joe passed away just 100 tweets shy of his 20,000th tweet.  His death is expected to add back at least 10 minutes of productive time per day to all of his followers.

After the coroner completed the autopsy, Councilman Lee Vokal announced that Craig’s body would lie in state for the next five days at the home of Jay Slagle, a family friend and author of Jack and Noah’s Big Day.  Joe was an unpaid social media consultant for the book, and had apparently foretold of his possible demise when he told Dan Lacroix, a close friend, “I’ll go to my grave trying to get 500 copies sold for Slagle.”

In the tradition of literary geniuses who have passed away, Kim Craig plans to release Joe’s final unpublished work posthumously.  It reads, in its entirety, “Good morning, Dundee, driving down Dodge Street in heavy traff….”

Later in the day, thousands of people who arrived en masse at the Dundee house where his body was lying in state.  Police provided crowd control and rerouted traffic at the home of Jay Slagle, the shameless Dundee-famous children's book author who wouldn't hesitate to exploit his friend's death in order to sell more books.

The Omaha World Herald reported that in the two years before Craig's death, he signed over 100 contracts with local and national companies that provided that the companies' products would be prominently featured by Joe's body during public viewings after his death.  Pringles, Tostitos and other companies reportedly paid over $10,000 each for the product placement.  It is unclear whether Jay Slagle, who organized the viewing, paid to have stacks of Jack and Noah's Big Day placed next to Craig's body.

A photo of Craig lying in state has gone viral on the Internet, and shows a basset hound presumably guarding the body of her master, Joe Craig.  The photo below has been posted by countless media outlets, but only Julie Cornandby, a hard-hitting special assignment reporter at local ABC affiliate Channel 7, bothered to find out if the story was real. In an exclusive interview with Cornandby, Slagle contradicted reports that the dog, Stella the basset hound, had been Joe Craig's dog.  "No, she's not paying her last respects," he said.  "Stella has a tremendous sense of smell, and she knows that there are Doritos on the table.  She's just waiting for the crowds to go away so she can eat."  Fortunately, the Internet doesn't really care whether a story is true or not, so the picture will continue to portray a man who died too young, and a dog who loved too much.

 In her annual Thanksgiving television show, media giant Martha Stewart shared a few of her favorite Thanksgiving traditions.  This year's show provided a few surprises, including Stewart's suggestion that recently-deceased relatives could be used as centerpieces for the dining table.  Stewart is exceptionally rich and has often been accused of making bad decisions, which led to her conviction for insider-trading and selecting Target as her partner for high-fashion retail items.  She may have stumbled again with this latest recommendation.  It appears that she got the idea from the Internet, after seeing Joe Craig's body lying in state on a dining room table.  "He's been a good friend," Slagle said, "and I figured our dining room table was big enough that we'd have room to seat 11 or 12 for dinner even if Joe's body was in the middle of it.  I mean, seriously, he's like 140 or 145 pounds soaking wet.  We might have to put the turkey on his chest, but I think we'll be fine."

Late on Thanksgiving Day, in a shocking turn of events, Joe Craig surfaced at the Omaha holiday lights festival, just over 24 hours after he was pronounced dead from excessive tweeting.  He did not, in fact, die on November 27, but rather had abnormally low system performance.  With a simple reboot by his wife, Joe was back to normal in just a few minutes.  All of Dundee rejoiced at the news, but many lamented that coffee prices would not be falling as predicted, since Joe would push up demand.  Jay Slagle, who was responsible for funeral arrangements, is now scrambling to find another way to drive traffic to his book's website.

Author's marketing tactic is a big fail; tattoo artist can't spell

Dundee, NE (AP)  In a shameless attempt to raise the visibility of his new book, Jack and Noah’s Big Day, Jay Slagle has been aggressively stretching the boundaries of good taste.  In addition to subjecting the Omaha community to the ’20 Days of Stupid’ campaign, he also commissioned a body art professional to ink a highly-visible tattoo that promoted the book.  Unfortunately, the tattoo artist didn’t use spell check.

The tattoo now spells ‘Buy My Booc.’  Slagle’s helpful friends and family members immediately started a new Facebook page, “Fix Jay’s Head,” which has garnered over 1 million ‘likes’ at last report.  The Facebook page is collecting suggestions on how to overcome this spelling debacle.  Current suggestions include the following:

  • BUY MY BOOGER
  • BUY MY KABOOP
  • BUY MY BOOGIE BOARD
  • BUY MY BOOQ (French or Islamic for ‘book,’ right?)
  • BUY MY BOOOOOOOOOK, DUDE (like a surfer would say)
  • BUY MY BETTY BOOP
  • BUY MY BOBBER

Several Omaha plastic surgeons have already offered to perform surgery to help Slagle improve his appearance.  Unfortunately, none of the offers are related to the tattoo, but rather are to fix his crooked nose, droopy eyes and caved-in cheeks.  However, a local business has offered to provide free hair plugs with extra-long bags to cover up the tattoo.

Jonesy Jones, the artist-in-residence at Fat Jonesy's Tattoos, Tacos and Burritos, defended his work when Slagle's plight became public knowledge.  "Oh, come on man, people don't come to me to write novels.  I draw things, and about the only words I ever tattoo are 'Mom,' 'Love' and 'Forever.'  Except usually people come back to me in a few years and have me make the 'Forever' tattoo into a black rectangle...."

Update on library ban

Omaha (AP)  In a surprise move, the Omaha Public Library website was updated on late Monday night to reflect that one copy of Jack and Noah’s Big Day has been ordered for its collection.  The one copy will be shared amongst the library’s twelve branches.  The exact arrival date is unknown, but overnight a line of people formed outside the Millard branch at the 13214 Westwood Lane.  When asked if he wanted to be first in line to check out the book, Tom Ferret replied, “Heck, yes.  By waiting in line for up to a week, I’ll be able to get thes $9.99 book for free.  That’s totally worth getting fired from my job, losing my girlfriend and risking frostbite.”

The one copy is now available for reservations on the OPL’s website.

In a late press release, Slagle thanked his three fans, and indicated that this was just what he needed to justify wasting a ridiculous amount of time on the 20 Days of Stupid.
